      All About Affordable, Alternative Transportation

Washington, DC is heavily invested in providing affordable, alternative transportation options to residents across all eight wards of the city, regardless of income. To help meet that goal, DC has a number of transportation programs that provide discounted access to Capital Bikeshare, dockless vehicles such as scooters, and catching a cab, among others.

One popular example is the Capital Bikeshare Community Partners Program which enables local nonprofits, government agencies, and community organizations to offer their clients a deep discount toward Capital Bikeshare Annual Memberships. If you receive ongoing, needs-based services from one of the Community Partners, you are eligible for a $5 Annual Membership. For more information, please contact one of the partner organizations.

Due to the disparity of dockless vehicles in Wards 7 and 8, the District Department of Transportation has required that all operators provide equal access to dockless vehicles across all wards in the District. In fact, permitted scooter operators must abide by a Low-Income Customer Plan so their system is accessible and affordable to all residents. If eligible, program participants can get FREE unlimited 30-minute trips. Meanwhile, Revel, DC's only electric moped operator, has an Access Program that offers a 40% discount on all rides to individuals who participate in local, state, or federal assistance programs. Revel will also credit $25 to anyone who enrolls in their Access Program.

Another newly developed program is the Taxi-to-Rail (T2R) service aimed at increasing transportation options for DC residents east of the Anacostia River. Launched in June, the T2R pilot program makes commuting across the Anacostia more accessible by offering FREE cab rides up to $10 to or from select Metro stations. Now, the program has extended its reach to ten Metro stations by adding Potomac Avenue and Navy Yard, in addition to servicing select grocery stores, and all libraries, recreation centers, and pools east of the Anacostia. In short, anyone using the T2R service will receive a FREE cab ride up to $10 to and from these locations. To use this service, call 202-727-3827 or use the T2R Quick Booker online. Rides also can be booked through the EZRidr app available in the Apple Store or Google Play.
