      It's Biking "May"hem!

May is observed as Bike Month which celebrates biking in communities across the nation. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and goDCgo is encouraging everyone to give it a try! Spring is a great time to start biking and there are a number of initiatives and local events happening in our city to help you get rolling on two wheels.

Bike to School Day (May 8)

The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012 in coordination with National Bike Month. This day provides a chance for everyone to join together and encourage children to safely ride a bike to school. National Bike to School Day is an opportunity for schools across the country to celebrate and build-off the momentum of National Bike Month, in addition to emphasizing bike safety. This year, there's over 2,700 schools registered nationwide and there's 33 registered schools in DC!

Bike to Work Day (May 17)

Bike to Work Day is an annual event that celebrates bicycling as a clean, fun, and healthy way to get to work. For starters, it's cheaper than driving to work, improves your health, and it's better for the environment. Despite the rain last year, 17,000 people still commuted to work by bike! Registration is FREE, so join the movement! Be one of the first 20,000 people to register, and you'll get a free Bike to Work Day t-shirt. All participants can stop by your choice of 115 pit stops in DC, MD, and VA and receive refreshments, snacks, and giveaways.

      DC Bike Ride (May 18)

The annual DC Bike Ride is a celebration of bicycling and an active lifestyle in the District. Held this year on Saturday, May 18, DC Bike Ride is the region’s biggest closed-road, car-free bike event, allowing you to cruise the streets at your own pace. The course is packed with entertainment, pit stops, great food, music, and even a scavenger hunt. After the ride, you can keep the party going at the Finish Festival with a live DJ. Grab your friends and family, and join the thousands who are celebrating life on two wheels! Sign-up today with the promo code "DCGOBIKE" for a special discount on the standard registration fee.

With your support, DC could easily become one of the most bike-friendly communities in the nation. Having prioritized bike safety and availability, it's no wonder why our nation's capital already ranks #11 for best biking city!
