Watch the City Transform on PARK(ing) Day

      August 23, 2016

First launched as an effort to encourage passersby to think about how we use urban space, PARK(ing) Day has grown to become an international event inspiring residents and businesses to transform an ordinary metered parking spot into a temporary public parklet.

On Friday, September 16, the District of Columbia will transform our very own metered parking spots into vibrant public "pop-up" spaces during the annual PARK(ing) Day celebration. Last year, we witnessed lawn games, custom furniture, and bike-blended smoothies from the more than 30 parklets that were created in the city. This year, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), which sponsors the event and issues the necessary permits, is looking to boost participation in creating even more parklets to promote a healthier, more vibrant DC.

“This event gives us another opportunity to showcase our efforts at making DC the greenest, healthiest, and most livable city in the nation while contributing to Mayor Bowser’s Sustainable DC Plan."

      - Leif Dormsjo, Director, District Department of Transportation

Want to join in on the fun festivities? Here are three simple steps to get started on creating your company's own “pop-up” park:

      1. Review the event guidelines and instructions.
      2. Scout your ideal parklet location.
      3. Submit your park concept and apply for a permit.

      1-2-3... and it’s that easy!

Remember to encourage your staff to take a lunchtime walk and check out what this year’s creative entries will bring!

For more information on participating in Washington, DC's PARK(ing) Day, visit ddot.dc.gov/page/parking-day. Act fast! The deadline to apply for a permit is Wednesday, August 31, 2016.
